"Managing the hazards to achieve
zero harm"
Safety is a priority held by SCT, it is a value. It is our belief that everybody who works
at or who visits the Terminal, should do so confident that they will go home in the same state of health as that in which they arrived.
It is accepted that the docks industry is a hazardous occupation; however these hazards can be managed in such a way that ‘Zero Harm’ occurs to those exposed to our activities. We are taking a number of steps to eliminate hazards before they lead to an accident, one such step is the engagement of consultants from DuPont to assist with training of key staff in skills relating to behavioural safety, another is the correction of unsafe behaviour through a programme of ‘safety intervention’ exercises.
It is with initiatives like these that SCT intends to lower the instances of lost time work related injuries. It is the SCT’s intention to reduce the instances of lost time work related injuries by a minimum of 80% over the next 5 years, a reduction of 20% year on year.
This target will be challenging and difficult to attain, but it is achievable. We will seek to achieve it with the involvement of employees at all levels of the Company. We will be focusing on a series of risk categories identified by P&O Ports, these are:
 |
Pedestrian safety |
 |
Handling loads |
 |
Working at heights |
 |
Contractors |
 |
Mobile equipment |
This priority demonstrates SCT’s commitment to health and safety, it is very important to maintain the continued health and safety of all persons on the Terminal. We will continue to keep people safe by managing our operations in a manner that not only avoids harm to our employees, contractors, tenants or visitors to SCT but in such a way that it adds sustainable value to our business.
